Betting at the World Series of Poker

In some major poker tournament such as: World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, how the betting is done constitute a big factor to the success of the said event. Betting has three types; fixed limit, spread limit and no-limit. It is up for the tour director which bet type to employ for each event.

In a structured or (fixed limit) system of betting, every raise and bet a player initiate is confined to some definite amounts, although these total usually grow even larger as the tournament (like the World Series of Poker) during the duration of the event. For illustration, in a stud 7-card tournament with a fixed limit peg at 10/20, Player can only raise a bet during the first three betting round ten dollars and subsequently increase it to twenty dollars in the last few rounds.

WSOP in some of their previous events also applies a semi structured bet limit. A semi-structured system gives players an array of arrays for allocated raises. As a rule, player who intends to make a raise must see to it that amount must be higher than what the preceding player has made. For instance, if player A raises twenty dollars then it is unlawful for player B to raise only an additional five dollars. Pot limit is an example of this format wherein players can't raise more than what the current value of the pot holds. Spread limit is another example of a semi-structured bet limit where bets (plus succeeding increases) should be within a minimum bet and maximum bet.

Unstructured betting or known commonly as no limit allows players to bet any amount they desire during the early rounds. Though in no limit games antes, blind and bring-ins are preset. Player has also the option of putting all his stakes or to go all-in. For instance, in a number of Texas Hold'em poker tournaments, it is normal to see players to wage 'all-in' prior to a flop. The Main Event at World Series uses this betting format which resulted in winners getting a big pot.

Betting structure plays a crucial factor in determining the outcome of a poker game. A structured game is so different with a no-limit format because each format has its particular style of play and the strategies applied. As an illustration, it is easy for players to bluff in a non limit game than in preset limit game. The bets in every round, together with the blinds, antes and bring-ins, normally shoot up either by the consumed in a game or the volume of combinations played.
